Matt Carroll of Hog's Breath Cafe Knox Wins Franchisee of the Year Award

Hog’s Breath Cafe takes pride in its reputation as the most successful restaurant group in Australia and recognises that, as with any business, creating and maintaining the brand requires a serious and disciplined organisational program and that, particularly in a franchise operation, in business as in sport, competition hones performance.

Which is why the group runs an extensive and intensive annual awards program. Participation is compulsory for all franchisees and is based on performance and commitment to excellence in a range of categories covering all aspects of their operations with judging carried out by management executive from the group’s head office.

Presenting the 2009 Awards at the Annual Conference, Hog’s Breath Marketing Manager Greg “Disco” Miller said the enthusiasm and competitive intensity of all the restaurants confirms their purpose and value and commented that standards are noticeably higher every year.


Knox owner Matt Carroll is fast becoming a Hog’s Breath legend. He opened Knox in 2006 and won two awards in his first year including the “Rookie of the Year” Award. He has been among the winners in the years since and was a finalist in three other categories in this year’s awards.

Matt has also added two further Hog’s Breath restaurants to his group at Karingal (Frankston) and Geelong. When asked the secret of his success, Matt’s response was not unexpected – “Just hard work and lots of hours.”

Matt also acknowledges the contribution of his staff, saying his successes are a credit to his team which has had very low turnover since the first days – which in turn is a positive reflection on Matt’s leadership and his focus on staff training and team building.
